The Spanish government has approved the Royal Decree creating the register of carbon footprint, offsetting and carbon dioxide absorption projects — a regulation that marks a turning point for corporate sustainability and climate action.
What the decree requires
The new framework makes it mandatory to calculate the carbon footprint and to draw up and publish greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction plans for certain organisations. It is a significant step towards decarbonising the economy and improving environmental transparency.
Who it applies to
The obligation covers:
- Companies that prepare consolidated accounts
- Capital companies with an average workforce above 500 employees
- Organisations considered public interest entities or meeting the criteria to be classed as large companies
- Public administration is also included in the decree
