Energy Savings Certificate (CAE)

What are energy savings certificates?

An Energy Saving Certificate (ESC) is an electronic document that guarantees that, after carrying out an energy efficiency action, a new final energy saving equivalent to 1 kWh has been achieved.

In this way, for example, if an action is carried out that implies a new annual saving of 500 kWh, 500 CAE can be obtained.

These are electronic documents generated from the annual savings in energy consumption obtained from energy efficiency measures implemented by consumers (mainly industrial companies).

What are energy savings certificates for?

This instrument allowsenergy savings to be monetized, recovering part of the cost of investments in energy efficiency (changing lighting, improving thermal insulation, renovating industrial or domestic equipment, etc.), asthe end user can receive compensationif they sell the savings obtained for subsequent certification through the CAE System.

This is one of the mechanisms approved in Spain that will promote the reduction of energy consumption in order to offset high energy consumption and limit the emission of pollutants.

How are energy saving certificates regulated?

Energy Saving Certificates are regulated by RD 36/23, as well as by orders TED 815/23 and TED 845/23, which complete the regulatory framework of the Energy Saving Certificate System (CAEs) in Spain.
