Certificates of Energy Saving (CAE)

What are energy savings certificates?

An Energy Saving Certificate (ESC) is an electronic document that guarantees that, after carrying out an energy efficiency action, a new final energy saving equivalent to 1 kWh has been achieved.

In this way, for example, if an action is carried out that implies a new annual saving of 500 kWh, 500 CAE can be obtained.

These are electronic documents generated from the annual savings in energy consumption obtained from energy efficiency measures implemented by consumers (mainly industrial companies).

What are energy savings certificates for?

This instrument makes it possible to monetize energy savings, recovering part of the cost of investments in energy efficiency (change of lighting, improvement of thermal insulation, renovation of industrial or domestic equipment, etc.), since the end user will be able to receive a consideration if he sells the savings obtained for subsequent certification through the CAE System.

This is one of the mechanisms approved in Spain that will promote the reduction of energy consumption in order to offset energy-intensive production and limit the emission of pollutants.

How are energy saving certificates regulated?

Energy Saving Certificates are regulated by RD 36/23, as well as by orders TED 815/23andTED 845/23, which complete the regulatory framework of the Energy Saving Certificate System (CAEs) in Spain.
