The problem with switching energy suppliers

Contract paperwork for an electricity supplier switch

Spain's CNMC finds paperwork irregularities in supplier switching: 10% of switches lack proper documentation. Measures to improve transparency.

The CNMC finds paperwork irregularities

Switching supplier in the electricity and gas market has become routine for consumers looking for better rates or service. A recent study by Spain's National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), however, has found irregularities in the paperwork behind that process.

According to its findings, roughly 10% of supplier switches show deficiencies in the associated documentation. These range from applications made without the customer's full consent to the loss of the social discount without the consumer explicitly waiving it. While the vast majority of switches (90.2%) do carry explicit consumer consent, the remainder lack proper documentation.

Faced with this, the CNMC is acting on the deficiencies it has identified. One measure is a set of regulatory proposals to improve the information available to consumers during the switching process. They also aim to make misleading commercial practices harder and to ensure switches happen transparently and fairly.

The expectation is that these measures will reduce administrative errors and strengthen consumer rights in the energy market. The CNMC has also produced a guide setting out the key points consumers should keep in mind when switching supplier, with advice on avoiding irregularities and ensuring the process runs smoothly.

At GRUPO TRÉBOL ENERGÍA we look after our clients' interests and are committed to promoting transparency and trust in the energy market. In our daily work as energy advisers we seek to protect consumer rights and encourage fair competition, which is why we consider these measures necessary for a more equitable and transparent energy market.
